LJUBLJANA (SLOVENIA). 9 – 10 July 2018. – Double appointment for Free to Choose on the 9th and 10th of July in Ljubljana, the Slovenian Capital, at Trubarjeva hiša literature Stritarjeva 7, where the 4th transnational project meeting (9th July) and a special public dissemination event (10th July) will see the participation of various institutional representatives including the Slovenian Institute of Employment, the Institute for Study of Gender Equality and KROJ Youth Network for Career Development. Led by Itaca Social Cooperative, Free to Choose aims at overcoming gender stereotypes in youngsters 16-29 years old to make them free to choose their education and professional path.
The public dissemination event will take place on the 10th July and will start at 9.30 a.m with a welcome & greetings session led by the Slovenian project partners Mcbit and Nefiks. The agenda foresees the intervention of Alenka Blazinsek from the KROJ Youth Network and Kaja Primorac from the Institute for Study of Gender Equality. The project will be presented by the project manager Tiziana Perin from the Social Cooperative Itaca (lead partner), while dr. Matteo Bisanti from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia will speak about “Free to Choose game: design, history and result”. Dr. Tindara Addabbo from Unimore will speak about “Gender stereotypes and discrimination”, dr. Giuliana Ingellis and dr. Capitolina Díaz from the University of Valencia will present a report on “Mind the gap & Coming out: gender stereotypes in Europe”. In the afternoon, from 2.30 pm to 4.30 pm, local youngsters will join the game session and will be among the first testers of the innovative board game that will be used as a guiding and teaching tool.
Tackling gender stereotypes by playing is possible, this is what are demonstrating the feedback of the first gaming tests and the results of the last months coming from the two researches led by Unival and Unimore. FtC is co-funded by the program “REC – Rights, Equality and Citizenship” of the European Union. Led by the Itaca Cooperative and targeting girls and boys 16-29 years old, it aims at overcoming gender stereotypes in education, training and workplace. Among its most important goals, Free To Choose has the purpose to develop a board game as a tool for educational and professional guidance which will help in decoding and tackling those gender stereotypes that still affect youngsters in the choice of their future training and professional path.
In addition to the project leader, the Social Cooperative Itaca, Free to Choose involves about 12 organizations from five European Countries in a partnership that includes the Labor, Education, Youth Policies and Equal Opportunities Department of Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region, Ires Fvg, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in Italy, Mcbit and Nefiks in Slovenia, Opciònate and University of Valencia in Spain, Apload in Portugal and the Mediterranean Institute for Gender Studies MIGS in Cyprus. The research association PlayRes of Modena, Paolo Mori, one of the most well-known game designer in Italy and Giorgio Gandolfi, one of the most important project manager in the field of game designing will take part in the events, too.
Free to Choose aims at raising awareness among girls and boys on the necessity to choose their education and career path free from preconceptions and gender stereotypes. In mid-August in Spain the board game will be officially launched through an open game session for young Europeans. Starting from October the game experimentation will take place in Slovenia, Italy (Friuli Venezia Giulia, Veneto and Emilia Romagna) and Portugal.
